How many handwashing stations do I need?
Plan 1 handwashing station for every 4 to 5 portable toilets, and add 1 station at each food line. The City of Detroit special-events guide uses the same ratio, 1 handwashing station per 4–5 restrooms. A 10-unit festival needs at least 2 stations, plus 1 for each food area.

Do construction sites in Michigan need handwashing stations?
Construction sites need a way to wash hands where workers handle chemicals, lead, concrete or food. Federal OSHA rule 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities where needed for applied paint, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, and lead work has stricter rules. A station next to the toilet is the simplest way to cover it.

Handwashing station rental questions in Detroit
Can I rent a handwashing station without a porta potty?
Yes. Food trucks, farm stands and indoor events with crowded restrooms rent stations on their own. They ride on the same truck when you also rent toilets.
How many people can use one handwashing station?
One 40-gallon station handles a few hundred hand washes before it needs a refill. Busy food lines may need a refill during a long day.
Does the handwashing station have warm water?
No. Portable stations use cool fresh water. If you need warm running water, a restroom trailer has heated sinks.
Can the station freeze in winter?
Yes. Fresh water can freeze below 32°F, so in winter we recommend hand sanitizer stands or a heated restroom trailer instead.
Who empties the gray water?
We do. Gray water stays in the sealed tank and is pumped out at each service or at pickup.
