What makes a porta potty wheelchair accessible?
A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor level with the ground, a door wide enough for a wheelchair, grab bars beside the seat and enough interior space for a 60-inch-diameter turning circle. The unit must sit on firm, level ground so the door threshold stays flat and the door closes on its own.

We describe these as wheelchair-accessible units. Whether a full setup meets the ADA also depends on the route to the unit, which is the event organizer’s responsibility.
Placement tip: Put the accessible unit closest to the paved path or parking area, not at the end of a row on grass. A firm, level route matters as much as the unit itself.

Ada porta potty rental questions in Detroit
Is a wheelchair-accessible unit the same as an ADA-compliant porta potty?
People use the terms interchangeably. The unit is built for wheelchair access, but whether the whole setup meets the ADA also depends on the route, slope and surface leading to it.
Do I need an accessible unit for a private backyard party?
The ADA rule applies to public accommodations, not most private parties. If any guest uses a wheelchair or walker, rent one anyway; it is the unit people remember you for.
Do job sites need an accessible porta potty?
Not usually by rule, but crews with an injured worker, an inspector or a client walkthrough sometimes request one. It also gives more room for workers in winter gear.
How much more does an accessible unit cost?
An accessible unit costs about $60 more than a standard unit for an event and about $55 more per 28-day cycle. See the price guide.
Can the accessible unit go on grass?
Yes, if the grass is firm and level. After heavy rain we place it on the driveway or a paved lot so the door does not sink or tilt.
