How does a flushing porta potty work without plumbing?
A flushing porta potty has its own fresh-water tank. Pressing the foot pump rinses the bowl with blue-tinted water, which hides the waste tank below. A second foot pump runs the sink. The unit needs no electricity, no hose and no sewer connection, so it sets up anywhere a standard unit can.
- Footprint
- About 44 in wide × 48 in deep
- Height
- About 92 in
- Fresh water
- About 18–20 gallons for flush and sink
- Waste tank
- About 60 gallons
- Inside
- Foot-pump flush, foot-pump sink, soap, towels, mirror, coat hook
- Hookups
- None
Typical figures for the flushing units we rent. The fresh-water tank, not the waste tank, usually sets the limit: plan about 1 unit per 50 guests for a 4–5 hour event.

When is a flushing unit worth the extra cost?
A flushing unit is worth the extra cost when guests are dressed up, food is served and there is no indoor bathroom: weddings, bridal and baby showers, graduation parties and milestone birthdays. For job sites, a standard unit plus a handwashing station usually costs less and holds up better to heavy daily use.
| Event | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Backyard wedding, 100 guests | 2 flushing units + 1 standard | Guests see a flush and a sink; the standard unit takes overflow |
| Graduation party, 80 guests | 1 flushing + 1 standard | Sink covers handwashing for food service |
| Framing crew of 8 for 6 weeks | 1 standard + handwashing station | Cheaper monthly and tougher for daily work |
| Wedding, 200+ guests | Restroom trailer | Several stalls, running water and lights |

Flushing porta potty rental questions in Detroit
How many flushes does a flushing porta potty get?
Plan on roughly 50 guests per unit for a 4–5 hour event. The fresh-water tank runs low before the waste tank fills, so very long events need a second unit or a mid-event refill.
Does the flushing unit need water or electricity?
No. Fresh water is filled at our yard and the flush and sink run on foot pumps. You only need level ground the truck can reach.
Is the flushing unit bigger than a regular porta potty?
It is about the same size outside. The difference is inside: a flushing bowl, a sink, soap, towels and a mirror.
Can I keep a flushing unit for a month?
Yes. Monthly flushing units get the same weekly service as standard units, including a fresh-water refill and sink restock.
Is a flushing unit cheaper than a standard unit plus a handwashing station?
It is usually a little cheaper than renting both, and it keeps the sink inside the unit. A separate station works better when many people need to wash hands at once, such as at a food line.
