Good placement means a level unit, an easy service visit and happy neighbors. Use this checklist before the truck arrives.

Where is the best place to put a porta potty?
The best place for a porta potty is on level, firm ground within 25 feet of where the service truck can park, away from food, doorways and property lines. A driveway edge or paved pad is ideal. Grass works when dry and level. Avoid slopes, soft lawns, septic fields and low spots where water collects.
How much space does the truck need?
The service truck needs a path about 10 feet wide and 13 feet high, with no low wires or branches, to park within 25 feet of the unit. A standard unit is rolled in on a dolly and needs a 48-inch-wide gate and a path without steps. Restroom trailers need a straight path to back in.

Can a porta potty go on the street or sidewalk in Detroit?
A porta potty on a Detroit street, alley or sidewalk sits in the public right-of-way, which falls under Detroit Public Works right-of-way permits. Placing the unit on your driveway, yard or a private lot avoids the permit in most cases.
Details in the Detroit permit guide.
How far should a porta potty be from food and guests?
Place porta potties 30 to 150 feet from food and seating: close enough for a short walk, far enough that odors and doors are out of the way. Put a handwashing station next to the units and keep the path lit for evening events.
