Porta Potties in a Michigan Winter: Freezing, Snow and Service
Detroit averages about 45 inches of snow a year. Here is how porta potties keep working through a Michigan winter, November through March.

Do porta potties freeze in Michigan winters?
Porta potties can freeze when temperatures stay below 32°F, but winter service prevents it. From November through March we add a salt-brine mix to each waste tank so it stays liquid well below freezing. Detroit’s January normal low is about 19°F, so every winter rental gets the brine treatment.

What do renters need to do in snow?
Renters need to keep a plowed path for the service truck and a shoveled walkway to the unit door. If the path is blocked by snow on a service day, the tech cannot reach the unit and the visit may be skipped. Snow piled against the door should be cleared by the crew.
- Do not plow snow onto the unit.
- Salt the step in front of the door.
- Tell us if the site will be closed for a holiday shutdown.

Do handwashing stations work in winter?
Handwashing stations hold fresh water that freezes below 32°F, so they are not reliable outdoors in Michigan winters. Use hand-sanitizer dispensers inside the units instead, or rent a restroom trailer with heat and running water for events and offices.
When is a heated restroom trailer worth it?
A heated restroom trailer is worth it for winter weddings, holiday events, office or plant outages and long-term sites where workers need warm running water. A trailer needs a standard outlet and a water source or tank, and it must sit on cleared, level ground.
